Lack of human resources in the RES sector – how shall we solve it?

To implement the renewable energy targets and  make the green deal happen, large investments are needed along with skilled people. However, the wind energy industry is already facing a challenge – there are not enough people who could implement large-scale investment projects. Large wind and solar developers have difficulty finding technicians, mechanics and engineers with specific knowledge of renewable energy technologies, and another pressing issue has arisen – the lack of environmental experts (ornithologists, bat experts). There is also a shortage of electricians who understand and are able to work with high voltage. The Latvian Wind Energy Association, together with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, have identified this issue as one of the industry’s challenges, which could slow down investment in renewable energy field and thus delaying the development of new capacities. Marking the Global Wind Day on 15 June, we’re organising an online discussion on how to attract interest to the renewable energy field.

Participants in the discussion:

  • Kārlis Strautiņš, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science
  • Gunārs Valdmanis, Director of the Energy Market Department of the Ministry of Climate and Energy
  • Baiba Lāce, Head of Ignitis Renewables Latvia
  • Vineta Melngārsa, Director of Valmiera Technical School
  • Laila Zemīte, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Environmental Engineering at Riga Technical University
  • Moderator: Aidis Thomsons

The discussion will be live-streamed on LWEA’s Facebook page. Discussion language – Latvian.
