Latvenergo joins the Latvian Wind Energy Association

More and more companies are joining the Latvian Wind Energy Association to jointly promote the development of the industry. Latvenergo, the leading producer of electricity and thermal energy in Latvia, has also become a member of the Latvian Wind Energy Association. The Group has made wind energy production a priority in order to achieve their goal of producing 75% of energy from renewable sources by 2030.

“Currently, foreign markets have shaken electricity prices in Latvia as well, putting both households and entrepreneurs in an unenviable situation. This is a clear signal that energy production from local resources must be developed much faster, with an emphasis on cheap, emission-free technologies,” says Toms Nāburgs, the head of the Latvian Wind Energy Association. “The accession of the country’s leading energy company to the Latvian Wind Energy Association, once again emphasizes the importance that wind energy has to play in the future, if we are to electrify it, while at the same time minimizing the impact on the environment.”

Kaspars Cikmačs, Technology and Support Director of Latvenergo, says “It is the responsibility of Latvenergo and other national companies to ensure that the interests of the state and its citizens are taken care of. In this case, developing new capacity in the energy sector so that cheap and sustainable energy can be secured in every home. The development of wind power plants in synergy with the safe and efficient operation of the existing generation is a high priority in Latvenergo Group’s strategy. This is determined by the need to minimize high electricity prices, which is also an opportunity to reduce imports of foreign energy resources. Latvia is among the leading implementers of renewable energy resources (RES) in the European Union, and the establishment of new RES has the potential to strengthen its position. New wind farms will help ensure the competitiveness of the state capital company, as well as ensure the reduction of electricity capacity deficit in the region by using environmentally friendly technologies. The increase in the efficiency of wind power plant (WPP) technologies, changes in market conditions of energy resources and CO2 quotas provide opportunities for WPP development without additional state financial support mechanisms. The goal – to obtain 75% of energy from renewable resources in 2030 – will promote Latvia’s progress towards the status of a climate-neutral country. Latvenergo, as a member of the European Wind Energy Association Wind Europe, works with foreign partners for the development of wind energy, and also joins the Latvian Wind Energy Association with the aim of further promoting the establishment of responsible WPP parks in Latvia.”

T.Nāburgs says that “The Latvian Wind Energy Association is constantly looking for opportunities to cooperate with state and municipal institutions in order to promote the implementation of wind farms already in the planning stage. We are also constantly working to showcase the benefits of wind energy to the public and to replace the myths about the wind industry with facts.”

It should be mentioned that the National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 has set a target to install 800 MW of wind energy capacity in Latvia by 2030.
